With information designer Jaap Knevel, we discussed the issue of schematization in the design process and its tendency for exclusion. Jaap was critical of the information design discourse that prioritizes simplicity through reduction. Allowing for more diversity in language and identity in information design may result in a more complex graphic representation, which is often discouraged in ‘modern’ graphic design. However, Jaap believes that complexity does not necessarily equate to confusion and suggested the example of multilingual wayfinding signs. He emphasized the importance of designers having dialogues with those represented in the design to avoid reproducing prejudices and stereotypes.
